the write stuff

Hope your new year is off to a spectacular start, y'all. I had a psychic reading on New Year's day (I know!). Damn. All good :)

As you know I've been taking a creative writing class. Our final assignment, due on 1/18, is an essay. Which, in itself, is an excellent exercise in writing. However, the not so excellent part is that I have no idea what to write about!

I've written down a couple of sayings/phrases that struck me and in my mind I sorta see how I could flesh 'em out. Just not sure I can flesh 'em out to fit 3-5 pages. Ai yi yi.

So...I ask you, my 5 readers, help a girl out here! Toss out a few topics...maybe somethin'll stick...

Pick a random memory from your childhood that brings you a smile. Write it from the perspective of your age at the time (instead of "going to" write "gonna"...if you said "ain't" instead of "is not", use it, etc.).

Lemme come up with some other ideas and I'll get back to ya!! :)

Well that ain't so bad, Melly Mel ~ thanks!

I think I'm trying to be deep and ambitious, wanting to write something profound that will make people go 'hmm'. Fail.

I've always liked the "write a letter to yourself at an earlier age" essay. Another one to consider is to pretend you had been born in a completely different part of the world. Anything from Istanbul to Norman, OK. What would you be like as an adult having grown up in that completely different environment?

Okay, I'm not sure if you've already been working on this assignment, but if not:
- How about an essay on how 2009 is going to be different than any year before? Are circumstances changing, are you changing, do you have new goals?
- What one experience has most profoundly shaped who you are today? Or if it's too hard to narrow it down to one, are there a few significant experiences you would point to as being especially key to you?
- What's your purpose in life? Are you still figuring it out? Do you know part of it but are still figuring out how to carry it out? Do you know what your purpose is in some areas but not in others?
- Talk about your favorite travel experiences. I enjoy reading when you've talked about visiting places and your interactions with people and experiences you've had.

I thought of a couple more:
- What's the last great book you read? What makes it great? Does it apply to your life, and if so, how?
- Talk about your most cherished memory.

Ooh! One more - what about writing about your favorite celebrity encounter, or just about your celebrity encounters in general? It's always fun to hear about that kind of thing.
